From Ethiopia to Aviation to Award-Winning Author: A Journey of Faith, Purpose, and Transformation
What happens when an author's greatest personal struggles become the inspiration for an award-winning book and a mission to help others?
For Berhanu Aberra Tadesse, the journey began in Ethiopia, took him into a professional career in aviation maintenance, and eventually led him to a life-changing spiritual encounter that inspired his book, True Light: A Journey from Darkness to Redemption.
Now the recipient of both the International Impact Book Award and the International Christian Book Award, Berhanu has transformed his personal experiences into a message of faith, hope, and spiritual renewal.
In this edition of Off the Page, we explore the experiences behind his writing, the surprising connections between aviation and faith, his passion for writing and singing Christian music in Amharic, and his plans to reach readers around the world.
The Interview
Heidi: You've described a journey from searching for purpose to finding freedom in Christ. What part of that journey first made you feel called to write True Light?
Berhanu: My own struggle with depression, anxiety, and inner conflict first inspired me to write True Light. When I encountered Christ personally in 2005, I began experiencing freedom and discovering my true identity in Him. I felt called to share that journey so others could find the same hope.
Heidi: For someone discovering your book for the first time, how would you describe True Light in your own words? Who did you most hope to reach when you wrote it?
Berhanu: True Light is a journey from inner darkness to spiritual freedom, revealing our identity in Christ and our ability to access the Kingdom of God. I wrote it for Christians seeking deeper transformation and for anyone searching for purpose, peace, and truth.
Heidi: Your book addresses fear, confusion, and the search for peace. What did you learn through your own experiences that you most wanted to share with readers facing similar struggles?
Berhanu: I learned that lasting peace does not come from controlling every circumstance; it comes from knowing who we are in Christ. Fear and confusion began losing their power when I renewed my mind with God's truth and surrendered my struggles to Him.
Heidi: Love, forgiveness, and redemption are central themes in your writing. Was there a particular biblical passage or teaching that became especially meaningful as you wrote True Light?
Berhanu: John 8:12 became especially meaningful to me: Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." I was also deeply inspired by 1 Peter 2:9, which speaks of God calling us out of darkness into His marvelous light. These passages express the heart of the book.
Heidi: One of your central messages is moving from darkness into God's marvelous light. What does that mean in practical terms, and what might a first step look like for someone who doesn't know where to begin?
Berhanu: It means leaving behind fear, condemnation, and a false identity and beginning to live according to God's truth. A first step may be as simple as honestly turning to Christ and saying, "Lord, reveal Yourself to me and show me who I am in You."
Heidi: Your professional background in aviation maintenance might seem worlds apart from writing and Bible teaching. Has that experience influenced how you approach your writing, teaching, or faith?
Berhanu: Yes. Aviation maintenance taught me discipline, patience, responsibility, and careful attention to detail. It also taught me that what is happening beneath the surface matters greatly—whether we are examining an aircraft, writing a book, or allowing God to transform the human heart.
Heidi: One of the most rewarding experiences for an author is discovering that their words have made a difference. Has a reader shared a response to True Light that stayed with you or helped you see your book's impact in a new way?
Berhanu: Yes. Readers have described True Light as encouraging, thought-provoking, and deeply challenging. Those responses remind me that the book is more than my personal story; God can use its message to help others examine their lives and begin their own journey of transformation.
The Man Behind the Message
Discovering something readers might never guess from an author's biography.
Heidi: Here's my favorite part of our interviews! What is something about your life, interests, or personal journey that readers might never guess from your author bio?
Berhanu: Readers may not know that I also enjoy writing and singing Christian songs in Amharic. Music gives me another way to express my faith and communicate truths that sometimes reach the heart differently than spoken or written words.
Heidi: You've already taken your message beyond the printed page. What are you working toward next as an author, speaker, and Bible teacher?
Berhanu: I have released the True Light audiobook recently. It can be found on many major audio platforms. I am preparing to launch my first online discipleship course, From Self to Christ, through True Light Academy. I am also developing my next book, Sacred Choice, while expanding my work as a speaker, Bible teacher, and life coach.
My desire is to help people discover their identity, make life-giving choices, and experience genuine transformation.
Beyond the Interview: About True Light
True Light: A Journey from Darkness to Redemption
At the heart of True Light is a question many people face at different points in their lives: How do we find lasting peace and purpose when fear, confusion, and uncertainty seem to surround us?
Drawing on his personal spiritual journey and biblical teachings, Berhanu Tadesse invites readers to examine the beliefs, fears, and internal struggles that may be holding them back.
The book explores themes of spiritual identity, self-awareness, forgiveness, love, and redemption through Jesus Christ. It challenges readers to look beyond the distractions and divisions of the world and consider how faith can influence their relationships, choices, and understanding of themselves.
Written for Christians seeking deeper spiritual growth and those exploring questions of faith and purpose, True Light combines the author's personal experiences with his desire to share the biblical principles that transformed his life.
Its central message is one of hope: Regardless of where someone is in their spiritual journey, Berhanu believes that meaningful transformation begins with a willingness to seek truth and embrace God's love.

From the Editor: Every Author Has a Story Beyond the Book
What I particularly enjoyed about Berhanu's interview was discovering the connection between his professional background and his approach to writing and faith.
His observation that what happens beneath the surface matters just as much in aviation maintenance as it does in personal transformation is a thought worth considering.
As authors, we bring far more to our books than the words we put on the page. Our professional experiences, personal challenges, unexpected talents, and defining moments all influence the stories we choose to tell.
I was also delighted to discover Berhanu's love of writing and singing Christian music in Amharic. It's a wonderful reminder that creativity rarely confines itself to a single form of expression.
Berhanu's journey illustrates how personal experiences can become the foundation for a book intended to encourage others.
And that is precisely why I love going Off the Page with authors. There's always another story waiting to be discovered.
